How
to take care of your fountain
pen |
-
Use fresh ink in your fountain
pen. Discard your ink if it is
more than 1 year old.
- Ink
cartridges are easy and convenient,
However, filling your fountain
pen with ink will result in fewer
problems over time.
- Use
cool, fresh water to rinse your
fountain pen. You should run water
through the pen's nib section
and feeder section until it runs
clear or nearly clear. Alcohol
and other solvents should not
be used.
- If
you travel by air, either completely
fill or completely empty your
fountain pen. Changes in airplane
cabin pressure can cause your
pen to leak. An empty pen obviously
poses no threat, but if you plan
to write on the plane, a full
pen eliminates the pocket of air
inside that can expand outward
(along with your ink) if the surrounding
air pressure in the cabin drops.
The air pressure in the pen is
generally greater than the air
pressure maintained in a plane
at 30,000 feet.
-
Finally, cap your fountain pen
by holding it upright and placing
the cap on top. Gravity, alone,
can cause ink to leak from the
fountain pen nib if you drop the
nib down into the cap. This will
help to insure that the ink stays
in your fountain pen where it
belongs, rather than creating
an ink surprise for you the next
time you uncap the pen.
-
If you have a fountain pen that
has built up dried ink deposits
over time, try soaking the nib
and feeder section submerged in
warm water overnight. The next
day, flush with running water.
This may loosen the deposits that
keep the ink from flowing the
way it was meant to.
